The Unglamorous Work That Actually Grows an Email List
I've used Constant Contact since 2005. I joined their Partner Program in 2014, became a Certified Partner in 2015, and earned my Master Certification in 2016. Since then, I have helped hundreds of small business owners get their email marketing started and keep it running.
The thing about list growth is this: it is not sexy. It is not a hack. It is a handful of unglamorous tasks most business owners know about but never quite get around to doing.
If your list has been sitting at the same number for a year, it usually just means you were never handed a plan. So let me hand you one.
Key takeaways:
List growth comes from six unglamorous, repeatable tasks, not a trick or a hack.
Give people one specific reason to hand over their email address, not a generic newsletter signup.
Never, ever buy a list. It costs you deliverability with the people who did say yes.

First, give people a reason
It's wishful thinking that your website visitors will remember your URL after they leave; it's not a marketing strategy. You need to give them a reason to hand over an email address, and "sign up for my newsletter" is not a reason.

Pick ONE specific problem your ideal client has. Solve it in a short piece of content that gives them a quick win. A checklist, a template, a swipe file, a short guide. The format matters far less than the specificity. "How to Write a Hot Headline" beats "Marketing Tips" every single time.
And no, you are not giving away your trade secrets. You are giving away a glimpse.
Second, build somewhere for people to land
Your free offer needs a home. A simple landing page with a headline, a short description, an opt-in box, and one call-to-action button. That is it.

Check your website platform first, because you may already have a template sitting there. Constant Contact has built-in landing pages, which is the tidiest option if you want signups flowing straight into your list with no integration headaches.
Keep the copy short. This is a free offer, not a sales page.
Third, put the opt-in where people actually are
Your website should be working for you around the clock. An opt-in can live in six places: a pop-up, your header, the bottom of every blog post, your footer, your main navigation menu, and your sidebar.

Do not do all six this week. Pick one, get it live, and watch what happens for a few weeks before you add another.
One small thing that makes a real difference: do not label it "opt-in" or "freebie" in your navigation. Use the offer's actual title.
Fourth, use your face

People spend money with people they know, like, and trust, and video gets you there faster than anything else. A free webinar asks for registration, which means an email address, which means your list grows before you ever open your mouth.
If webinars make your palms sweat, start smaller. Go Live on Facebook or Instagram and talk about your free offer. Instagram Lives have no replay, so announce them ahead of time and point people to your link fast.
Fifth, work the platforms you already use
Your Facebook business page has a cover image, a call-to-action button, and a place to pin a post. All three can point to your free offer, and many business owners don't use these opportunities.

On Instagram, change your link in bio, make a post about the offer, and use the link sticker in Stories. If someone would rather DM you their email address than click through, let them.
Sixth, borrow somebody else's audience
Partnerships are the fastest way to reach people who have never heard of you. Guest on a podcast, write a guest post, co-host a webinar, or run a giveaway with a business friend whose audience overlaps with yours.

Make every pitch personal. Do your homework on the person first. A lazy copy-and-paste pitch will get deleted, and it can cost you a relationship you have not even built yet.
One non-negotiable
Whatever you do, do NOT buy a list. Not ever. Purchased contacts did not ask to hear from you. They will likely not open your emails, and if they do, they will often mark you as spam, which will drag down the deliverability of every message you send to the people who did say yes. A small list of people who want you is worth more than a big list of strangers.

How to grow your email list this week
Pick the one strategy on this list that made you nod. Just one. Give yourself until Friday to get it live.
This is exactly what my planner, How to Add 100+ New Subscribers to Your List in 30 Days, does. It maps out all six strategies with the brainstorming exercises already built in, so you are not starting from a blank page.
And if you would rather hand the whole email operation to somebody else, I do that too. Come book a discovery call and let's talk about what you actually need.
