Health Insurance for Self-Employed Owners: How I Went From Almost $1,200 a Month to $269

In the fall of 2025, I opened my health insurance renewal notice and just about fell out of my chair. My premium was set to jump to almost $1,200 a month. I was already paying close to $900 a month, and that was WITH help from the ACA. As a solo business owner, that isn't a line item you can shuffle around, so my plan was to go without insurance and pay cash for everything. It felt terrible, but I didn't see another option.
If open enrollment season has you dreading your own renewal notice, you're in very good company. Finding affordable health insurance for self-employed business owners has gotten tougher this year, so here's what I found instead, what surprised me most, and the dates to know if you want to look into it for January.
Before I go any further: I'm not an insurance agent, and I'm not pretending to be one. I'm a small business owner sharing what has helped me. I'm also a Benefit Airship affiliate, so I earn a commission if you sign up through my link, at no extra cost to you.

Health Insurance for Self-Employed Owners Took a Big Hit in 2026
My renewal notice turned out to be part of a much bigger story. The enhanced ACA premium tax credits expired at the end of 2025, and according to KFF, the average monthly premium Marketplace enrollees paid after tax credits rose 58% in 2026, from $113 to $178. Average deductibles climbed 37%, from $2,759 to $3,786, the steepest increase since the Marketplaces launched in 2014. And this lands squarely on folks like us, because health insurance for self-employed owners usually comes out of our own pockets. KFF estimates that 48% of adults under 65 who buy their own coverage are self-employed, own a small business, or work for a business with fewer than 25 employees.
What I Found Instead
Then I found Benefit Airship. I started on one of their plans that has since been retired, and in May I moved to their MVP plan, where I now pay $269 a month. I have Cigna, and here's the part that still makes me smile: I got to go BACK to my doctors at Sutter Health. My last ACA plan didn't let me see them, so being back with my Sutter Health folks has been a huge weight off my shoulders.

What Surprised Me Most
I switched to save money. I didn't expect to love the extras this much! My prescriptions are 100% covered under my plan, and they're shipped right to my home. I just pay shipping (which beats waiting in line at the pharmacy counter any day). That alone has been a HUGE money saver.
The part I didn't see coming was the online portal. At the beginning of the year, I was dealing with a blood pressure nightmare, and I could reach a healthcare professional any time, day or night, by video or by email. At one point I was convinced I needed to go back to the ER, and a nurse practitioner talked me off the ledge. That peace of mind was outstanding.
Small Business Health Benefits for a Team (or a Team of One)
Many of the business owners I work with want to offer health benefits to a small team or a few trusted contractors, and they assume they're too small to qualify. I thought the same thing! With Benefit Airship, there's no minimum number of employees, so even a one-person business qualifies. There's no minimum budget either. Full-time, part-time, and 1099 contractors can all be covered, and they handle enrollment, employee support, and billing, with no long-term contracts.
For a little context, the KFF 2025 Employer Health Benefits Survey puts the average annual premium for employer family coverage at $26,993, and 61% of firms with 10 or more workers offer health benefits. When your whole team fits around one kitchen table, it's easy to assume those numbers were written for someone else.
Before You Switch
It's important to note that the MVP plan works differently than an ACA Marketplace plan. If you get a subsidy now, compare carefully before you make a change. There are several plan levels, from full medical coverage to add-ons like vision and dental, so look at what fits you. Every person and every business is different, which is why I suggest booking a call with their team and asking all of your questions. My numbers are mine, and yours may look different.
When Does Benefit Airship Coverage Start?
Register by the 15th of any month, and coverage starts on the 1st of the next month. If you want coverage that starts January 1, December 15 is the date to know.
Take a Look at the Plans
I'll say it one more time: I'm not an insurance agent. I'm a business owner who was about to go without coverage and found something that has worked for me. If you're staring down your own renewal notice, it can't hurt to see what's out there. You can look at the plans through my link here (affiliate link, I earn a commission at no extra cost to you).
If you know a fellow business owner who's dreading open enrollment, I'd really appreciate you passing this along.
And if you're an insurance agent who would like to learn more about Benefit Airship, let me know! I'd be happy to connect you with their team.
